BJP questions Telangana’s El Nino preparedness after Assembly seeks Central aid

Senior BJP leader Gudur Narayana Reddy on Saturday questioned the Telangana government’s preparedness to deal with the possible impact of El Nino, saying the demand for Central assistance should not take the focus away from measures to be implemented by the State.

Reacting to the resolution adopted by the Legislative Assembly on Friday seeking a ₹20,000-crore special package from the Centre for the deficient rainfall situation, Mr. Reddy said seeking assistance was legitimate but could not substitute for State-level planning and preparedness.

He alleged that the Congress government was using its political confrontation with the BRS and the Centre to divert attention from issues affecting farmers, workers, students, women, businesses and other sections of society.

The BJP leader said the El Nino situation required sustained administrative attention, particularly in view of its possible impact on agriculture, water availability, the power sector and the wider economy. He recalled that he had in July called for an integrated water management strategy, optimal utilisation of available Godavari and Krishna waters and contingency planning for a prolonged dry spell.

Mr. Narayana Reddy demanded that the government disclose the implementation status of these measures and their impact on the ground.
