BMA fires 17 officials as border authority cracks down on corruption - EWN
The Border Management Authority (BMA) said that it is intensifying its crackdown on corruption and lawlessness at South Africa’s ports of entry, with tighter mechanisms in place to detect and expose wrongdoing.
BMA Commissioner Mike Masiapato said that the authority was taking a firm stance against corruption, warning employees that no bribe was too small to trigger consequences.
In the last quarter, 57 disciplinary cases involving BMA employees were handled, with 17 officials fairly dismissed for corrupt activities, including accepting bribes of as little as R20 or R50.
Masiapato said that the BMA was working with local and international government institutions to strengthen integrity, ethical conduct, and accountability across the country’s ports of entry.
He was speaking at the BMA's anti-corruption awareness campaign in Kempton Park on Friday.
