BMU’s Super Specialized Hospital plans 2 liver transplants a month at ‘lower cost’

Bangladesh Medical University’s (BMU) Super Specialized Hospital has successfully completed six liver transplant surgeries, with the university planning to perform two such procedures every month.

Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr FM Siddiqui announced the plan at a press conference at the hospital’s lecture room on Wednesday.

He said four more patients are being selected and prepared for liver transplants, with the hospital targeting 24 surgeries a year from now on.

Siddiqui said the procedures at the hospital cost less than half of what they do in neighbouring countries.

While the cost there is around Tk 100 million, he said the surgeries will cost Tk 30-35 million at the BMU’s hospital.

He added that the cost is likely to come down further as the programme develops.
