In the canton of Valais, Switzerland, police have recovered the bodies of two Belgian mountaineers who went missing in the Swiss Alps 34 years ago. A statement indicated that the bodies of the two unfortunate climbers were uncovered due to melting at the Trift Glacier. On July 26, a hiker in southern Switzerland, near the Italian border, came across the two bodies and notified the police. The police immediately transported the bodies to the Institute of Forensic Medicine at the Valais Hospital in Sion for a detailed examination and identification.
An official statement issued following the investigation stated, “Through direct comparison of DNA profiles, it has been officially confirmed that the individuals are the two mountaineers who went missing in the Weissmies region in 1992.” The two Belgian mountaineers were 39 and 41 years old when they went missing. The Valais police maintain a list of missing persons dating back to 1925, the majority of whom went missing in the mountains and rivers.
As this development demonstrates, climate change is accelerating the melting of glaciers, and as the ice recedes, the bodies of those who perished in the mountains decades ago are being uncovered. Last year, the bones of a Swiss mountaineer who went missing in 1994 were found in a glacier on Ober Gabelhorn in Wallis.
