Nobuntu Hlazo-Webster, Build One SA Mayoral candidate for the City of Joburg was received well during her party's last election rally in Finetown, South of Joburg.

As South Africa gears up for local government elections this coming week, Dr Mmusi Maimane, the leader of BuildOneSA (BOSA), has taken the stage at the party's final election rally in a bid to rally support for Joburg's mayoral candidate, Nobuntu Hlazo-Webster.

Speaking passionately to the people of Finetown, south of Johannesburg on Thursday, Maimane emphasised the critical nature of the elections scheduled for Wednesday, November 4, urging residents to exercise their democratic rights with care and deliberation.

In a city grappling with water supply issues and deteriorating infrastructure, Maimane's message was clear: the upcoming vote will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of Johannesburg.

“Your vote will decide who manages your money, fixes your roads, and keeps your streets safe,” he declared, at a time when citizens are increasingly frustrated with service delivery failures.

Pledging an administration driven by accountability and competency, Hlazo-Webster laid out her vision for Joburg, which centres on three key priorities: restoring reliable service delivery, rebuilding the city’s financial integrity, and repositioning Johannesburg as an economic hub for both South Africa and the continent.

“We must get the basics right. We cannot accept a situation where residents pay for services they do not receive,” she added, promising to tackle these issues head-on.

On financial discipline, Hlazo-Webster stated that every rand collected must translate into improved services, emphasising the need to combat corruption and wasteful expenditure. Her agenda includes the support of small businesses, the unlocking of township economies, and the attraction of investment—all aimed at creating job opportunities for the youth.

As Johannesburg is home to 82 of Gauteng's 182 political parties, coalition government is likely to remain a central issue. Maimane cautioned voters to be wary of the implications of coalition governance, especially in light of historical instability caused by parties prioritising self-preservation over residents' needs. “Judging parties only by their campaign rhetoric is a mistake; consider their past political choices when power was at stake,” he warned.

Both Maimane and Hlazo-Webster are keenly aware that any potential coalition must be built upon a firm foundation of accountability and shared commitments to public service. For BOSA's mayoral candidate in the City of Gold, the city's myriad service delivery woes can be traced back to the years of political instability, where parties have prioritised their own political survival over the needs of residents.

“We cannot repeat that experience. Any coalition BOSA participates in must be founded on a clear, publicly available agreement with measurable service delivery commitments, financial accountability, transparent appointments and a commitment to stable, effective government,” she asserted.
