A child is in a serious condition after being shot in the face and neck in Sydney's north-west this afternoon.

Paramedics were called to Fairway Drive in Norwest just after 5pm after reports of a shooting.

"Officers attached to The Hills Police Area Command attended and found that an 11-year-old boy had been shot in the face and neck," a NSW Police statement said.

It is understood multiple paramedic crews were treating the 11-year-old at the scene, with two specialist medical teams also on site.

Police said the shooting took place inside the Norwest home and five other people who were at the property at the time of the shooting were uninjured.

The child is expected to be transferred to Westmead Children's Hospital shortly.

A crime scene has been set up, with the unit block where the shooting occurred cordoned off.

One local resident told the ABC he was driving home from work when he came across the intense police and paramedic presence.

"I see this absolute insane scene, something out of the movies," he said.

"This is something really unexpected of Norwest … it is quite frightening."
