Brazil has not offered and does not intend to offer asylum or refuge to Nicolás Maduro. According to members of the government, the Venezuelan leader has also shown no interest, contrary to reports that circulated in recent days.

If Maduro were to request protection, which could occur if he entered Brazilian territory or the Brazilian embassy in Caracas, the government would analyze the request. However, the perception is that Brazil would not be the dictator’s first choice.

The fact that the country did not recognize the 2024 Venezuelan elections, which were deemed fraudulent by international observers, has strained bilateral relations.

Senior officials in the Brazilian government say the priority is to avoid U.S. military action in Venezuela.

According to them, an attack could open the door to further interventions in the region, in countries such as Colombia and Mexico, which have been criticized by Donald Trump for their leaders’ alleged leniency toward drug trafficking and illegal migration.
