Brazil Open to Discussing Joining Regional Security Alliance Created by Chile - 30/09/2026 - World - Folha de S.Paulo

Brazil is open to talks and is considering joining the Santiago Regional Commitment Against Transnational Organized Crime, an alliance created in May by Chile under President José Antonio Kast and comprising Argentina, Bolivia, Ecuador, Peru, Paraguay and Uruguay. According to Folha, Brasília received an informal invitation and did not respond, but views the proposal favorably. The election period complicated the decision.

The issue resurfaced last week, when the bloc’s presidents met for the first time in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. Brazil was invited to the meeting and expressed interest but did not attend because the meeting was rescheduled and it did not receive updated information.

The group emerged two months after the Shield of the Americas, an initiative by Donald Trump’s U.S. administration that has been described as an instrument for intervention in the region.

Six of the Santiago Commitment’s seven members are part of the Shield. The exception is Uruguay, which is close to the Lula administration. The founding document, however, calls for a coordinated regional response without mentioning terms such as narcoterrorism.
