SCMP ReporterPublished: 6:21pm, 12 Sep 2026Updated: 7:19pm, 12 Sep 2026Chinese President Xi Jinping on Saturday urged Brics members to bring cooperation to “new heights” in areas such as artificial intelligence.
Speaking at the Brics summit in New Delhi, he proposed an initiative on “AI-empowered new industrialisation” designed to deepen collaboration on industrial and supply chains.
He also urged members to play a “due role” in bringing peace to the Middle East, adding that the group of emerging economies opposed bloc confrontation and the “infringement upon the sovereignty of other countries and interference in their affairs”.
He said the war in the Middle East had caused serious losses to people across the region and did not serve the common interests of the international community, according to state news agency Xinhua.
The Chinese leader hailed the bloc as the world’s most influential platform for cooperation among emerging markets, adding that it had become a “model of joint self-reliance for emerging markets and developing countries”.
Xi invited all Brics countries to join the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organisation, a Chinese-led initiative designed to shape global AI governance and development.
