American supermodel Cindy Crawford's son, Presley Gerber, has died aged 27.

Gerber's death was listed on the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner portal as having occurred at a rehab facility on Sunday, local time.

Several US media outlets also reported that a representative of the family had confirmed the death and had asked for the family's privacy to be respected.

The 27-year-old was the only son of Crawford and her businessman husband, Rande Gerber, and the older brother of model-actor Kaia Gerber.

Gerber's Instagram profile, where he had previously documented his battle with mental health and sedative use, was flowing with tributes on Monday.

He began his modelling career aged 15, before going on to be signed on for major fashion weeks globally. 

In 2019, Gerber was arrested in California for driving under the influence and was later sentenced to three years' probation.

His sister told Vogue in an interview last month Gerber's drug addiction over 10 years had taken a toll on the family.

"I think that's also why I started to self-​identify as the easy one and never wanted to ask for help," she said.

"Because it felt like too much to have two children who were needing."

But the model said she was proud of her brother for opening about his struggles and seeking help, with the siblings sharing a close relationship.

Gerber ran a "Mental Health Mondays" series on social media, sharing his mental health journey and progress with followers.

He had also undertaken psychoactive drug therapy in Mexico earlier this year.
