BRS teams visit Genco thermal power plants, inspect coal stocks

Teams of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leaders visited several thermal power plants in the State on Thursday to examine the coal stocks there and the position of power generation in the wake of reports of disruption in generation due to lack of coal stocks, and farmers staging protests demanding quality power supply to agricultural pump-sets, at least during the day-time.
They visited Yadadri Thermal Power Station (YTPS) at Dameracherla in Nalgonda district, Kakatiya TP Project at Chelpur in Jayashankar-Bhupalapally district, Kothagudem TPS at Palvancha, and Bhadradri TPP in Bhadradri-Kothagudem district. A team also visited the Singareni Collieries corporate office here, staged a protest and submitted a memorandum on required coal supplies to power stations.
A team led by former Minister for Energy G. Jagadish Reddy visited YTPS, and speaking after the visit, he said the energy woes of the State had reached pre-2014 stage in the Congress rule - now affecting power supply to farming and leading to withering of standing crops. The reasons being cited by power utilities for fall in generation were misleading as the Singareni was being made to sell good quality coal to Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, he alleged.
The missing stock of 40,000 tonnes of coal in Singareni coal handling plants was also linked to the local generating stations facing coal shortage, the BRS leader alleged.
Another team led by MP Vaddiraju Ravichandra visited KTPS and said the station had very low coal stocks of poor quality (G13 and G14) though G9 and G10 grades were also available in some of the Singareni’s mines. He claimed that some Singareni lab officials had told him that G9 and G10 grade samples from Singareni mines were in the lab.
Meanwhile, KTPP was visited by a team led by Errabelli Dayakar Rao, who said the farm sector was not being given even six-hour quality supply, leading to withering of crops.
Party leaders Koppula Eshwar, T. Jeevan Reddy, K.P. Vivekanand, D. Sravan, Shambipur Raju, N. Diwakar Rao and TGBKS leaders Raji Reddy and Surender met Singareni Collieries’ Chairman and Managing Director Buddhaprakash Jyothi and sought to know the reasons behind fall in production from 70 million tonnes to 58 million tonnes, and for supply of poor quality coal to generating stations in Telangana, while supplying quality coal to power stations in other States.
Mr. Eshwar alleged that the State government dues of ₹52,000 crore to Singareni was also one of the main reasons for fall in coal production - about 17% in 2025-26 - compared to the previous year.
