BRS turns land allegations on Revanth Reddy, seeks probe into both families' assets

The land row in Telangana Assembly took a sharp turn on Wednesday, with the BRS seeking to turn Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy’s allegations against its leadership back on his family and demanding an independent judicial probe into the assets and land transactions of both sides.

Hours after CM Reddy accused the previous BRS government of alleged land irregularities worth around Rs 1 lakh crore and ordered a probe into alleged irregularities involving BRS chief and former chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao’s farmhouse, BRS MLA and Legislature Party deputy leader T Harish Rao hit back, accusing the chief minister of speaking “lies” in the Assembly and attempting to divert attention from public issues.advertisement❮❯ Read Full StoryBRS COUNTERS CM’S LAND ALLEGATIONSHarish Rao said the BRS had, within about an hour of Reddy’s allegations, received information and documents from people in the chief minister’s native place regarding land allegedly held by members of his family.

“While you were speaking, Revanth Reddy, I received messages on WhatsApp from people in your native place. I also received messages from Kalvakurthy,” Harish Rao said in the Assembly.

He claimed that villagers in Kotur had alleged that Reddy, his brothers and other family members owned around 300 acres there. However, Harish Rao said he did not want to make a “hasty allegation” and instead sought documentary evidence.

“We received documents for 175 acres. I am placing all those documents before you. 175 acres in just one village,” he said.

Rao also referred to alleged land holdings in Kondareddypally, located just over 70 kilometres from Hyderabad, saying that while information received by the BRS suggested 79 acres, affidavits available with the party showed 54 acres.

Based on the documents and information it had received, Harish Rao claimed that around 308 acres were held by members of CM Reddy’s family.

“So, the information we have collected in just about an hour suggests that a total of 308 acres is held by the Revanth Reddy family,” he said.

He also referred to claims from villagers that the Outer Ring Road alignment had come close to some of the land and that other infrastructure projects could be planned nearby, but stressed that he was relying on documentary evidence rather than the larger claims.

“If I wanted to make a hasty allegation, I could simply say, like the villagers told us, that there are 300 acres in Kotur. But I have documentary evidence for 175 acres,” Harish Rao said.BRS CALLS FOR INDEPENDENT JUDGE-LED PROBE

The BRS leader then sought to turn the chief minister’s demand for an inquiry into KCR’s land holdings into a broader challenge covering both political camps.

“Whether it concerns the Dharani system during the BRS government or Bhu Bharati since the Congress came to power on December 7, 2023, we are ready for a comprehensive inquiry into any irregularities during both regimes,” he said.

Harish Rao proposed that the inquiry be headed by a sitting Supreme Court or High Court judge, rather than officials working under the state government.

“Let us have an inquiry by a sitting Supreme Court judge, or a sitting High Court judge. Come forward and accept it,” he said.

“SITs cannot be constituted with officials who work under you. This inquiry should be completely independent, neither yours nor mine,” he added.

He further sought an examination of land transactions under both the Dharani and Bhu Bharati systems, as well as the assets of political leaders and their family members.

“Let us investigate the alleged irregularities during the BRS government as well as those during your tenure, including issues related to Dharani, Bhu Bharati and land transactions,” Harish Rao said.

“Let us also examine the assets of your family and our leaders, including how our assets and those of you and your brothers have increased. We are ready for an inquiry by a sitting judge. Are you ready?” he questioned.WHAT WAS REVANTH REDDY’S ALLEGATIONS AGAINST KCR?

Harish Rao’s counter came after Reddy launched a sharp attack on the previous BRS regime during his marathon speech in the Assembly on lands listed under Section 22A of the Registration Act.

The chief minister alleged that BRS leaders, their supporters and relatives had “looted” lands worth around Rs 1 lakh crore and said the allegations needed to be investigated.

“They (BRS leadership), their supporters and relatives have looted lands worth about Rs one lakh crore. Truth should come out. There should be an inquiry into this. Justice should be done to poor,” Reddy said.

A major part of Reddy’s allegations centred on KCR’s farmhouse at Erravelli in Siddipet district. The chief minister alleged that 388 acres of government-assigned land was part of the farmhouse and questioned whether nearly 700 acres was under KCR’s control.

“KCR should answer whether about 700 acres of farmhouse is in his control or not,” Reddy said.

He directed the revenue department and the district Collector to issue a notice to KCR and ascertain how much land he purchased, what land was originally available and who was in control of the alleged 388 acres.

Reddy also directed ministers and officials to complete the inquiry within 30 days, warning that action would be taken against those who failed to meet the deadline.

The chief minister further said that government land found to be under KCR’s control would be distributed among Dalits, with each beneficiary receiving half an acre.

Reddy claimed that KCR became the owner of the land after its regularisation in 2017 and alleged wider irregularities involving BRS leaders and their supporters.
