KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi is being considered for appointment as the new head of the Hawks.

KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi is being considered for appointment as the new head of the Hawks.

Acting police minister Firoz Cachalia has initiated the process to appoint a permanent director for the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation.

This follows the retirement of General Godfrey Lebeya in May last year, with his deputy holding the position in an acting capacity since.

As per legislation, the acting minister must first seek Cabinet approval for his nominee.

Mkhwanazi has been in the spotlight for over a year since blowing the whistle on alleged criminal interference in the SAPS, giving rise to probes by Parliament and the Madlanga Commission.

"The acting minister has submitted a Cabinet memorandum seeking Cabinet's concurrence for the appointment of Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi as the national head of the DPCI. The memorandum will be presented at the earliest opportunity during a Cabinet sitting," said Police ministry spokesperson Kamogelo Mogotsi.
