It was a bloody start to the new school term after a shooting incident took place in front of a Cape Town primary school on Tuesday morning. 

A 31-year-old man was gunned down just before 8am in a silver Hyundai i10. The victim is believed to be linked to a local gang. 

The provincial police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Frederick van Wyk confirmed the shooting incident. 

“Crime scene experts are currently on a crime scene opposite a primary school in Belgravia Road, Athlone, combing the area for clues following a shooting incident on Tuesday, October 6, at about 7.40 amin which a 31-year-old male was shot and fatally wounded,” van Wyk said. 

Police said the victim had been dropping a child at the school when the incident took place. 

“According to reports, the victim just dropped his child when unknown gunmen approached him and randomly started shooting at him, fatally wounding him. He sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his face and upper body,” van Wyk said. 

The victim was declared dead on the scene by medical personnel. 

“The motive for the attack is believed to be gang-related. The suspects fled the scene and are yet to be arrested. Athlone police registered a murder case for investigation,” van Wyk said.
