CDF Munir urges US-Afghan war commission to incorporate regional, Pakistani POVs in conflict's review

Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir urged the US-Afghan War Commission to incorporate regional and Pakistani perspectives in the conflict's review, the military's media wing said on Monday. The Afghanistan War Commission is a bipartisan legislative commission established by the US Congress in December 2021 to conduct a comprehensive review of key decisions related to US military, intelligence, foreign assistance, and diplomatic involvement in Afghanistan from June 2001 to August 2021. According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), a delegation led by commission co-chairs Shamila N Chaudhary and Dr Colin F Jackson called on CDF Muinir at General Headquarters, Rawalpindi. "Field Marshal Munir underscored the importance of incorporating the regional perspective and Pakistan’s experience in assessing the strategic, diplomatic and operational dimensions of the conflict." "Discussions covered matters of mutual interest, including Pakistan’s support, the regional security environment and developments in Afghanistan, with a focus on perspectives relevant to the Commission’s work". The media wing added that CDF Munir shared Pakistan’s perspective on the security dynamics that shaped the conflict and highlighted the challenges faced by Pakistan during the prolonged conflict in Afghanistan. "The delegation acknowledged Pakistan’s longstanding role and sacrifices during the conflict in Afghanistan and appreciated its continued contribution to regional peace and stability," ISPR stated. During the war, 2,238 US service members died and nearly 21,000 were wounded. Independent estimates put the number of Afghan security forces and civilians killed at more than 100,000. In his address to the General Debate of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly on September 25, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said that Pakistan had lost nearly 100,000 civilians and members of its armed forces and had suffered economic losses exceeding $150 billion in the fight against militancy.
