The Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Vidyavardhaka College of Engineering (VVCE), Mysuru, on Thursday launched a Centre of Excellence for Immersive Technologies in association with BodyClone Technologies Pvt. Ltd.
The centre was inaugurated by Lt. Col. Ajit Kumar (Retd.), senior practice lead, Infosys BPM Unit, Mysuru, in the presence of Gundappa Gowda, president, Vidyavardhaka Sangha, P. Vishwanath, secretary, Vidyavardhaka Sangha; B. Sadashive Gowda, principal, VVCE; and Sampath Kumar, CEO and technical head, BodyClone Innovations Pvt. Ltd, Pooja M.R., professor and head, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, VVCE, faculty coordinators, faculty members and students of CSE Department were present.
Speaking on the occasion, Lt. Col. Ajit Kumar highlighted the potential of Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) in making military training more realistic and immersive. He said the technologies could enhance situational awareness, facilitate equipment training and reduce certain risks and costs associated with conventional training. He stressed that the effectiveness of AR and VR depends on their integration with trained personnel, established procedures and practical operational experience. He also noted that simulated environments enable repeated practice, performance assessment and timely feedback, helping trainees identify and improve areas requiring attention.
The initiative aims to bring together academia, industry, students, researchers and innovators to create an ecosystem for learning, experimentation and development of immersive technology applications. The centre will facilitate industry-oriented projects, internships, research and solutions to real-world challenges, providing students and faculty opportunities to move beyond theoretical learning and gain hands-on experience with emerging technologies, according to a press release.
