Chandigarh Head Constable shot dead at home, 3rd Punjab cop attacked in a month
Chandigarh Police Head Constable Nitin was shot dead at his home on Friday morning, marking the third deadly attack involving a Punjab Police personnel this month.
Neighbours heard a gunshot and alerted the police. When a team reached the house, Nitin, who was posted in the Accounts Branch at Chandigarh Police Headquarters, was found lying on his bed with a bullet wound to his head.
He was rushed to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead. A country-made pistol, suspected to have been used in the shooting, was recovered from the spot.
According to Chandigarh SSP Kanwardeep Kaur, the victim's wife and son were present at the time of the incident.
When asked whether Nitinβs son was suspected of shooting him, the SSP said the investigation was underway and nothing could be said at this stage.
The Chandigarh shooting comes a week after Punjab Police Assistant Sub-Inspector Harjit Singh was shot dead in Amritsar on September 18. Singh was on PCR duty when he was attacked near the Bhagtanwala grain market.
One of the suspects in Harjit Singhβs murder, identified as Deepak Singh, was later killed in a police encounter in Amritsar, while another suspect fled the spot. Police said Deepak had links with Pakistan-based terrorist Shahzad Bhatti and his network.
Earlier, on September 11, ASI Jaswant Singh, posted in Ajnala, Amritsar, survived an apparent shooting while returning home after duty. Motorcycle-borne assailants attacked him, with a bullet grazing his head and passing through his turban.
There have also been fatal attacks on police personnel in Punjab this year.
On February 22, ASI Gurnam Singh and Home Guard personnel Ashok Kumar were shot dead at a police checkpost in Gurdaspur district.
On March 7, constable Jagjit Singh was killed. On May 24, ASI Joga Singh was shot dead near Majitha.- Ends
