Three independent constitutional bodies, known as Chapter 9 institutions, are holding a joint national inquiry into how South Africa’s criminal justice system responds to gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF), with a focus on reporting, victim support, investigations and pre-trial processes. South African Human Rights Commission spokesperson Wisani Mbaloi told CapeTalk and 702’s Africa Melane that the inquiry followed complaints from victims who said they did not feel safe or supported by the system.
“Those who are victims don’t feel safe in the system itself,” he said, adding that this could lead to secondary victimisation.
