China Looks to Deepen Coal Ties with US - Tempo.co English
TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - China's Ministry of Commerce is aiming to deepen coal cooperation with the United States, including by increasing US coal supplies in the coming years.
Following consultations on trade and economic issues, China and the US agreed to include US coal imports in the framework of reciprocal tariff reductions, the ministry said, as reported by RIA Novosti on Monday, as quoted from Antara.
"Economic and trade delegations from China and the US reached a consensus that Chinese tariffs on coal imports from the US will be included in the framework of mutual tariff reductions based on a ‘$30 billion for $30 billion’ principle," according to a statement from the Chinese Ministry of Commerce.
The ministry emphasized that the agreement will facilitate China's coal imports from the US in 2027 and 2028.
"We hope that through joint efforts, cooperation between China and the US in the coal sector will continue to deepen, ensuring mutual benefit and results that serve the interests of both parties," the ministry added.
The ministry also noted that US coal imports will be a beneficial complement to China's domestic coal market, while providing stable economic revenue and jobs for the US coal industry.
This will also contribute to the stabilization and expansion of bilateral trade.
Previously, in trade and economic consultations, China and the US agreed to reduce tariffs on each other's imports, totaling US$30 billion.
At the same time, tariffs on approximately 90 percent of related goods from each side will be lowered to most-favored-nation (MFN) levels.
Chinese President Xi Jinping paid a state visit to the United States at the invitation of US President Donald Trump from September 23-25.
