China to help Pakistan set up AI-powered law enforcement centre

China agreed to support Pakistan in setting up a modern law enforcement centre using artificial intelligence-based technology, as the two countries moved to expand cooperation on internal security, the Interior Ministry said on Wednesday. According to a post on X, the agreement was reached during a meeting between Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and China’s Vice Minister of Public Security Gao Qi, where the two sides discussed bilateral relations, joint measures to counter terrorism and drug trafficking, and cooperation in police training and modern technology and equipment. Naqvi said Chinese artificial intelligence-based technology and equipment could provide significant assistance in dealing with security challenges. “We want to further expand cooperation in the field of internal security,” he said. The two sides also agreed to expand the police training exchange programme and cooperation in modern technology and equipment. In February 2025, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and China’s Vice Minister of Public Security Qiu Yanjun discussed strengthening intelligence and security cooperation, border security and the acquisition of advanced technology and equipment for Pakistan’s police and paramilitary forces. They also agreed to strengthen cooperation between the National Police Academy and the police forces of Islamabad and Beijing. The issue of counterterrorism cooperation was raised again during Naqvi’s meeting with China’s Minister of State for Public Security and head of the Special Service Bureau, Ling Zhifeng, at the United Nations headquarters in New York in July 2026. The two sides agreed to expand cooperation on internal security, border management, illegal immigration, and efforts against drug trafficking. Naqvi also called for joint action to prevent terrorist financing, while Ling praised Pakistan’s sacrifices in the fight against terrorism.
