China to strengthen flood defenses amid extreme weather

China will accelerate the development of a modern water network to strengthen flood defenses. Water Resources Minister Li Guoying said climate change has brought more extreme rainstorms and floods, adding to the uncertainty facing flood prevention efforts. Over the next five years, China aims to expand its reservoir capacity by 15 billion cubic meters and ensure that 91 percent of its major levees meet national safety standards.
