Christa Pike’s execution, the first involving a woman in 200 years in Tennessee, has been halted by a court an hour before it was set to take place.
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit approved a last-minute request for a stay of execution for Pike, the only woman on Tennessee’s death row.
“The court has stayed this recognizing the serious concerns about Christa’s scheduled execution,” her attorney said, per WKRN.
Pike's execution is now stayed "until further order of this court," the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit said.
Pike was set to be executed at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, September 30.
