City Power says it can’t confirm restoration of electricity supply in Joburg CBD - EWN

Residents in Johannesburg's CBD may have to contend with power outages for longer, as City Power said it cannot confirm when electricity supply will be restored.

Large parts of the inner city have been in the dark for five days following a fire at the central substation.

The latest power outage hit just a day after electricity was restored following a two-week-long outage in the same area.

City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena said power to the affected areas will be restored in phases.

“This work is being carried out in stages because each section of the network must first be checked and confirmed safe before it can be returned to service. The objective is to progressively restore the electricity supply to affected customers as different sections of the network are safely brought back into operation. 

“Restoration efforts only resumed this morning because, although the smoke had cleared on Sunday, 27 September 2026, and the area had been released for the technical assessment and restoration process, temperatures inside the affected area remained too high for teams to safely continue working.”
