City Power’s planned electricity restoration to Joburg thrown into uncertainty - EWN
City Power’s planned restoration of electricity to parts of Johannesburg has been thrown into uncertainty after an electrical fault at Central Substation triggered smoke in the feeder board room.
The utility said the incident happened on Sunday evening while technicians were switching the substation back on following repairs at Karzene Substation.
Affected areas include the Johannesburg CBD and Selby.
Spokesperson Isaac Mangena said the smoke forced them to isolate the facility while Emergency Management Services (EMS) secured the site.
“Given this latest development, City Power can no longer confirm the previously communicated restoration target of Monday, 05 October 2026. A revised estimate will be provided once teams have assessed the damage and established the work required.”
