Clean Water Crisis in Pontianak, City Government Offers 30 Percent Discount for PDAM Customers
PONTIANAK, KOMPAS.com — The Pontianak City Government in West Kalimantan (Kalbar) has implemented two policies to address the clean water crisis caused by drought and increased salinity in raw water sources.
The two measures include distributing clean water to neighborhoods, districts, and various public points, as well as offering a 30 percent discount to residential customers of Perumda Air Minum Tirta Khatulistiwa for two months.
Pontianak Mayor Edi Rusdi Kamtono said each neighborhood and district has been asked to prepare water storage tanks with a capacity of 4,000 to 5,000 liters.
“These storage tanks will serve as water distribution points for affected communities,” Edi said on Tuesday (15/9/2026).
The water being distributed is clean freshwater processed by Perumda Air Minum Tirta Khatulistiwa.
Although safe to drink, residents are advised to boil the water before consumption.
According to Edi, the freshwater supply is currently relatively sufficient, supported by the smooth operation of Water Treatment Plant 3 at the Imam Bonjol Booster station.
Approximately 1,000 tons of freshwater are produced daily to help meet the community's needs.
Distribution covers 29 neighborhoods and districts as well as several public locations.
Additionally, mosques with water storage tanks will also be involved as distribution points.
The city government ensures that distribution sites will be adjusted to local community needs.
Information regarding distribution points will be regularly updated so residents can easily find the nearest water collection locations.
Beyond distributing clean water, the Pontianak City Government is offering a 30 percent discount to household customers of Perumda Air Minum Tirta Khatulistiwa for two months, starting in September 2026.
Edi said this policy demonstrates the government's commitment to support residents affected by the decline in raw water quality due to drought and seawater intrusion.
“This is intended to help alleviate the community's burden,” Edi explained.
