Debutant director Jason Sanjay said his father Thalapathy Vijay will not promote Sigma, as he wants the campaign to stay focused on the film rather than on him. Speaking at the film’s pre-release event in Salem, Jason said Vijay, now Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, has many responsibilities and is instead waiting to watch the film.

Jason said he wants Sigma to be recognised for its story and the work of its team, not simply as the first film directed by Vijay’s son. The project marks an important step for him in building an identity separate from his father, one of Tamil cinema’s biggest stars, whose career spans more than three decades with films such as Ghilli, Thuppakki, Mersal and Leo. Vijay later entered politics with Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam and has taken on a larger public role as its leader.

At the event, Jason said, "My father (#ThalapathyVijay) is waiting for the release of #Sigma. My father won’t be promoting my film. I want the promotions to be about the film and not him. I don’t want it to overlap. And he’s become CM now, so he has so many responsibilities. He’s waiting to see what I’ve done and is very excited," he said at the event.

When asked what one quality he had learnt from his father, Jason replied: “Punctuality”. Asked about his first reaction when Vijay became Chief Minister, Jason said, “I felt very happy. It was obviously a very happy moment for me and everyone around him.” He also said he would consider acting opportunities after Sigma releases. Earlier on Tuesday evening, Jason was interrupted during the Salem pre-release event by loud chants of TVK. The crowd grew increasingly vocal while he was on stage and continued chanting until he acknowledged them with a thumbs-up.

The moment came after Jason thanked his team and said, “A special thanks to my family,” drawing loud cheers from the audience. As the noise continued, actors Sundeep Kishan and Faria Abdullah were seen reacting from the stage area while Jason smiled and nodded. The host also tried to adjust the microphone volume before the chants took over, after which Jason gave the crowd a thumbs-up and continued with his speech.

Jason also said at the event, “We’ve all had a Sigma moment in our lives. We’ve faced big troubles due to the decisions we’ve made, but have risen from them. I believe this story about a common man is one that everyone can relate to.”

Sundeep Kishan also praised Vijay during the event, calling him “the identity of our film and our biggest inspiration,” while Jason smiled and appeared to agree with the actor.

The TVK chants came amid speculation around Vijay and Jason’s relationship. The discussion intensified after reports around Vijay’s wife Sangeeta Sornalingam’s divorce petition and after Jason reportedly unfollowed his father on Instagram in March. Sangeeta later withdrew her divorce petition in August. Neither Vijay nor Jason has publicly addressed the speculation.

Attention around Vijay’s personal life has also coincided with renewed interest in his long-standing association with Trisha Krishnan. Their public appearances, including their recent outing at Silverstone, have fuelled fresh speculation, though neither Vijay nor Trisha has publicly confirmed a romantic relationship.

Produced by Lyca Productions, the heist comedy stars Sundeep Kishan, Faria Abdullah, Sampath Raj, Shiv Panditt, Yog Japee, Sheela Rajkumar and Raju Sundaram, among others, with music by Thaman S. Jason has described the film as a story about a common man that viewers can relate to. The film was first scheduled to release on July 31, but was postponed after Vijay’s Jana Nayagan hit theatres on July 23. It is now set to release in theatres on October 2.- EndsPublished By: Priyanka SharmaPublished On: Sep 16, 2026 19:54 ISTALSO READ | CM Vijay, Trisha attend Ajith Kumar's Le Mans Cup Race at Silverstone.
