Commanders provide injury update on guard Sam Cosmi - Commanders Wire
Things went from bad to worse for the Washington Commanders in Sunday’s 37-20 loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday at AT&T Stadium. Washington played outstandingly early, knocking on the door of a tie just before halftime when quarterback Jayden Daniels stepped on an offensive lineman’s foot, tripped, and awkwardly landed on his left elbow. He would exit the game with what was later ruled a dislocated elbow.
It was the same elbow that Daniels dislocated last season. Marcus Mariota replaced Daniels and appeared to tie the game early in the third quarter with a touchdown pass to Dyami Brown. Somehow, it was ruled incomplete, stunning the announcers and everyone watching.
That would essentially end the competitive portion of the game. Unfortunately for the Commanders, more bad news followed.
Left tackle Brandon Coleman left the game with a finger injury and did not return. Coleman is replacing Laremy Tunsil, who tore his triceps last month. Starting defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw left the game with a shoulder injury. Kinlaw appeared to be in significant pain.
Finally, on Washington’s final drive, right guard Sam Cosmi, the Commanders’ best offensive lineman, was blocking when running back Kaytron Allen crushed into him, stunning Cosmi, who went to his knees. He stayed on the ground for several minutes before staff helped him off the field.
There was no update on Cosmi during the final minutes of the game, but head coach Dan Quinn said after the game that Cosmi was in concussion protocol.
What does that mean moving forward? It’s hard to tell. Concussions are difficult to predict. Cosmi must complete every step of the program, including clearance from the team doctor and an independent doctor. He could play next week or be out much longer. Quinn is unlikely to provide further updates on Cosmi until he returns to practice.
Rookie Matt Gulbin replaced Cosmi late in Sunday's game.
