Police are searching for attackers responsible for the deaths of 27 people in separate mass shootings in Cape Town and Johannesburg.

Seventeen people were killed, and 15 others wounded when gunmen opened fire at a tavern on Saturday in Wedela on Gauteng's West Rand.

Meanwhile, in Cape Town, gunmen killed 10 people and wounded 11 others at a shisanyama in Lwandle on Sunday morning.

President Cyril Ramaphosa said security forces have been instructed to intensify efforts to bring down the escalating violence in the crime.

"Violence and criminality continue to spread in our country...this is the level of criminality that we must bring down..."
