Court sends 27 to prison after police raid on JaSad office

The court has sent 27 people to prison after they were arrested during a police raid on JaSad, or the National Socialist Party’s headquarters in Gulistan, with their bail hearing set for Monday.

The 27 were arrested under Section 54 of the Code of Criminal Procedure after police raided the party’s Gulistan office on Saturday, bdnews24.com reported.

Police initially detained around 300 people during the operation. After verification, 27 were arrested and sent to court, while the others were released.

According to the prosecution, the detainees created an “unstable and disorderly environment” inside the JaSad office while chanting “Joy Bangla”. Police said they could not provide satisfactory explanations when questioned about why they had been at the office.

Police Sub-Inspector Nazmul Islam from Paltan Model Police Station sought an order to keep the 27 in custody. Their lawyers, Nilanjana Rifat and Taslima Jahan Poppy, applied for bail.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Joshita Islam ordered the 27 to be sent to jail and set Monday for the bail hearing, prosecution police Sub-Inspector Masum Mia said, according to bdnews24.com.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Motijheel Division Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Harun-or-Rashid had earlier said around 280 to 300 people were taken into custody during Saturday’s raid.
