Court sets Nov 10 deadline for probe report against Jamaat leader Akhtaruzzaman
A Dhaka court has sought a report by Nov 10 on the case against Jamaat-e-Islami leader Akhtaruzzaman Ranjan, who is accused of threatening the executive director of Dhaka’s Shahjalal International Airport and assaulting a security supervisor.
The first information report (FIR), filed by airport security officer Md Shahriar Alam Sajib, reached the court on Friday afternoon. Metropolitan Magistrate Albiruni Mir accepted the case.
Prosecution police Sub-Inspector (SI) Abu Bakkar Siddique said the court has asked Airport Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Majedul Islam to submit the report.
After the case was filed, Kamrul Hasan Talukder, chief of the station, told bdnews24.com that Akhtaruzzaman stands accused of obstructing government work and making threats.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch (DB), meanwhile, took Akhtaruzzaman, a former MP, into custody over the incident at the airport.
Asked about the situation, DB Additional Commissioner Shafiqul Islam said personnel were at the politician's house and he would accompany them once he finished his prayers.
A video of Akhtaruzzaman berating Executive Director SM Ragib Samad over delays in distributing Zamzam water to Umrah pilgrims went viral on social media on Thursday.
In the footage, he is heard threatening to throw the executive director out by the neck and accusing airport officials of getting posts through lobbying.
The FIR alleges he also hit security supervisor Md Kamal Uddin, a warrant officer, for telling the group not to film in the airport's key point installation area, and flung passengers' Zamzam water bottles off trolleys.
It says the assault was not on CCTV but can be proved through the testimony of the victim and witnesses.
Biman Bangladesh Airlines has meanwhile suspended two officials over the delay, baggage in-charge Monirul Islam Pradhan and flight supervisor Saddam Hossain.
Both have been asked to explain the alleged negligence.
Akhtaruzzaman, a retired major, joined Jamaat before the 13th parliamentary polls.
He won the Kishoreganj-2 seat as a BNP candidate in 1991 and June 1996. His younger brother Anisuzzaman Khokon, a BNP MP for Mymensingh-19 in 1979, ran as an independent this time.
