The Johannesburg High Court will now decide whether the African National Congress (ANC) can bar its National Executive Committee (NEC) member, Andile Lungisa, from standing as a candidate in the 4 November local government elections.

The Johannesburg High Court will now decide whether the African National Congress (ANC) can bar its National Executive Committee (NEC) member, Andile Lungisa, from standing as a candidate in the 4 November local government elections.

Lungisa has taken the ANC, its NEC and secretary-general to court, challenging the party’s decision to exclude him from its candidate list for the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality.

The ANC said its vetting process found adverse information against Lungisa, including a criminal conviction and sentence that were upheld by the Supreme Court of Appeal.

In a statement, the party has sought to clarify the circumstances surrounding the dispute that played out in the Johannesburg High Court this week regarding Lungisa’s exclusion.

It said every person seeking to stand under its banner in an election must undergo its vetting process without exception.
