Cowboys DC Christian Parker addresses viral video of talk with rookie - USA Today

The Dallas Cowboys' season-opening loss to the New York Giants necessitated several conversations about the breakdowns that plagued a defense trying to move on from last year, when it surrendered more points than any other unit in the NFL.

One such summit occurred during the game.

On Wednesday, Sept. 16, a video of a sideline interaction between Cowboys rookie linebacker Jaishawn Barham and first-year defensive coordinator Christian Parker was spread wide on social media. Barham looked ahead as Parker, who sat next to him, spoke with him. Barham then stood up and walked away with fellow linebacker DeMarvion Overshown.

One day later, Parker broke down the interaction, which he said was driven by the rookie's frustration.

"It was his first NFL game. Things aren’t going to be perfect," Parker said in a news conference. "This isn’t a fairy tale at all. Jaishawn cares as much as anybody in that locker room about us winning, No. 1, but No. 2 our defensive performance."

Parker added that the team had no concerns about Barham's passion or level of dedication.

"I don’t think anyone in our building has any doubt about what he’s gonna do coming real soon," Parker sad. "We don’t have any reservations about his mentality. We welcome that passion. Have to channel it better. That’s something that young players have to go through. It’s a natural progression."

A third-round pick out of Michigan, Barham played in 49% of the Cowboys' defensive snaps in the 28-20 loss to the Giants. He collected five tackles in his debut yet earned an unwanted spotlight in the fourth quarter. He appeared to pull up while in pursuit of running back Devin Singletary, who took a pass to the flat into the end zone for a 9-yard touchdown.

New York racked up 29 first downs on the night and converted 9 of 11 third downs.

The Cowboys face the Washington Commanders on Sunday in Week 2.
