The Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Sunday (September 20, 2026) launched an agitation, demanding that more than 100 acres of vacant government land at Ajit Singh Nagar in Vijayawada, including the 57-acre Disneyland site, be allotted to the poor as house sites.

They took out a rally to the Disneyland site, where they planted party flags and staged a protest near a makeshift hut erected as a symbol of their agitation.

Addressing the gathering, CPI(M) State secretariat member Ch. Babu Rao demanded that two cents of house site be allotted to every eligible poor family before the elections to Vijayawada Municipal Corporation. He said that 20 acres of railway land and 30 acres of land earmarked for a waste treatment plant in the area could also be considered for allotment to the poor.

Mr. Babu Rao alleged that the government was claiming that land was unavailable for house sites while proposing to construct 15-storey TIDCO housing complexes. He said the four-storey TIDCO houses constructed at Jakkampudi nine years ago were yet to be fully completed and handed over to beneficiaries.

He alleged that vacant government lands in the city were being earmarked for corporate entities while the government was not making land available to the poor.
