The Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] has demanded that the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) withdraw its move to begin toll collection at the Nattika toll plaza here before the construction of National Highway 66 is completed.
In a statement, CPI(M) Thrissur district secretary K.V. Abdul Khader said several major stretches of the highway were still incomplete, making the proposed toll collection unacceptable.
Construction of bridges at Chavakkad (Orumanayur), Chetuva and Kandassankadavu, besides approach roads at Edamuttam, Moonnupeedika and several other locations, is yet to be completed, he said.
“The move to start toll collection without completing these works cannot be accepted,” Mr. Abdul Khader said.
He alleged that construction of NH 66 had slowed considerably over the past four months, with the earlier pace of work giving way to delays. The review of construction progress had also stalled, he added.
Construction activity from Kodungallur towards Ernakulam, Alappuzha and Kollam districts has slowed in the absence of proper planning, according to the CPI(M).
Starting toll collection at Nattika in such circumstances would also be contrary to the NHAI’s earlier position, Mr. Abdul Khader said.
The CPI(M) warned of a strong agitation against the proposed toll collection. As part of the protest, the party will take out a march to the Nattika toll office at 10 a.m. on October 7.
