Students from different streams of engineering such as mechanical, electronics, and electrical and communication displayed their skills on the second day of technological festival, graVITas’26 organised by VIT here on Saturday.
Events such as robo wars, drone racing, toycathon that revolved around making scientific toys, the big band theory, and map quest were core events on day two of the fest where competing students were busy checking last minute details in their innovative equipment like robo cars.
“Classroom learning helps in sharing ideas with team members while developing robots for competitions. Inputs from senior participants were also valuable during such a fest,” said V. Payal, a student.
A winning robot in robowars competition needed aggression, control and was based on the extent of damage caused to competing robots.
Divided into two categories (15kg and 60kg) based on the weight of the robot, those in the bout were remotely operated by a team outside the ring. A damaged robot in the ring should be repaired in 20 minutes to participate again but could not be replaced with a new robot.
Another attraction at the fest was drones. Participating teams should make their drones navigate a series of obstacles such as arch-shaped structures and poles to a distance of around 200 metres. The drones should not hit these obstacles. Drones that take lesser time to reach the finish line were declared winners. The key to success in the drone competition was to have small, weightless drones that can easily navigate the obstacles.
The competition also provided a platform for students to run their own startups. Titled as capital hunt, experienced investors in the startup industry were roped in to guide students on the nuances of running successful startups.
The three-day fest would feature a total of 227 events, with more than 40,000 students expected to take part. Of these, 76 events were already conducted before the three-day event. The total prize pool was estimated at around ₹25 lakh in cash and ₹1.5 crore worth of prizes in kind.
At the valedictory function on September 20, Atul Sahgal, senior vice-president and global head of Talent Acquisition at Cognizant, would be the chief guest. Hemant Sahal, a VIT alumnus and founder-CEO of Digii, would be the guest of honour.
