Rain intensified in parts of Jharkhand on Thursday (October 29, 2026), and the weather department has issued an alert for a downpour till next morning under the influence of "very severe" cyclonic storm Arnab that made landfall along the Andhra Pradesh coast on Wednesday (October 28, 2026).

Gudabanda in East Singhbhum district recorded the highest 71.4 mm rainfall since Wednesday (October 28, 2026) evening, followed by Manjhari in West Singhbhum district at 64 mm, the weather department in Ranchi said.

Ranchi registered 26.2 mm of rainfall, while Chaibasa recorded 60 mm of rain during the period.

"Rain will continue on Thursday [October 29, 2026] with some districts experiencing heavy to very heavy rainfall. However, the impact will vary by region. For instance, the effect will be less pronounced in the Santhal region, where there is no alert for heavy rainfall," said Abhishek Anand, the Deputy Director at the Ranchi Meteorological Centre.

An 'Orange' alert of heavy rainfall has been issued for Garhwa, Palamu, Latehar, Lohardaga, Gumla and Simdega till 8.30 a.m. on Friday (October 30, 2026). A 'yellow' alert, advising people to stay updated about the weather, has been issued for Chatra, Koderma, Hazaribag, Ramgarh, Ranchi, Khunti, Saraikela-Kharsawan, and East and West Singhbhum districts.

"The cyclonic weather system will weaken by October 30 and move a bit away from Jharkhand. There is no warning for Friday [October 30, 2026]. Light to moderate rainfall is expected during the first half of Friday [October 30, 2026] in the districts of the northwest and those adjacent to the north," Mr. Anand said.

Several districts, including Ranchi, West Singhbhum, East Singhbhum and Simdega, ordered school closure on October 28 and 29 in view of the cyclone.
