Cyclone Leaves 6 Dead and More Than 700 Injured in Paraná - Folha de S.Paulo
Six people died and more than 700 were injured after an extratropical cyclone hit Paraná between Friday afternoon (7) and early Saturday (8). The phenomenon generated a tornado that devastated Rio Bonito do Iguaçu, a town of 14,000 inhabitants located 380 km from Curitiba. According to the state government, more than 1,000 residents are displaced or homeless.
"The three biggest markets were destroyed. Everything is on the ground. But we ask people to remain calm. We made it through the hardest part; now comes the reconstruction," said mayor Sezar Augusto Bovino.
Since Friday, 835 medical treatments have been recorded, and 32 people remain hospitalized, four of them in ICUs. None is in critical condition. Power company Copel restored 49% of the grid, prioritizing essential services like health posts and Civil Defense operations.
Five of the six deaths occurred in Rio Bonito do Iguaçu. The sixth was recorded in rural Guarapuava. The state declared three days of official mourning. In São Paulo, 29 people were displaced on Sunday morning, and Santa Catarina reported 32 displaced residents.
