Damaged power facility throws Ogun community into darkness - Punch Newspapers
Electricity supply has been disrupted in Arepo, Obafemi Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State, following a fault caused by a shattered insulator at the Transmission Company of Nigeria’s end of the network. The outage has left residents waiting for repairs by the TCN maintenance crew before Ikeja Electric can restore supply to the community, the Secretary of the Arepo Area Community Development Council Electricity Committee, Akinlolu Akinpelumi, said in a statement on Monday to residents. “The fault, reportedly caused by a shattered insulator, is currently being attended to by the TCN Maintenance Crew,” Akinpelumi said. He said repair work was ongoing, expressing hope that the TCN engineers would resolve the fault promptly to enable Ikeja Electric to restore electricity to the community. “We have been informed that repair work is ongoing. The latest outage comes against the backdrop of longstanding complaints by Arepo residents over epileptic electricity supply and prolonged blackouts in the fast-growing community along the Lagos-Ogun axis. In a previous report, PUNCH reported that residents had threatened legal action over a four-month period of severe outages, during which they said they received barely two hours of electricity daily despite being upgraded to Band B under the service-based tariff regime. Community leaders and residents have repeatedly engaged Ikeja Electric over the inadequate supply, which they said had disrupted businesses and made daily activities difficult. The AACDC Electricity Committee has also maintained communication with Ikeja Electric and transmission authorities in efforts to address recurring faults.
