Delhi man stabbed to death after argument over matchbox request denial

A refusal to lend a matchbox to light a cigarette led to a fatal stabbing outside a wine shop in northwest Delhi, police said on Wednesday. A 30-year-old man was killed and another was injured in the attack.

Police said the two victims, Bhawani and Asha Ram, were attacked by three people after an argument broke out over the request for a matchbox. The incident took place on Tuesday in the Keshav Puram area.

According to police, the quarrel began when the victims said they did not have a matchbox. The argument then escalated, and the accused allegedly attacked the two men with fists and a knife, a senior police officer said.

Bhawani was taken to Deep Chand Bandhu Hospital, where he was declared brought dead. Police said he had suffered a deep wound on the left side of his back.

Asha Ram, 32, suffered a stab injury to his left lower chest and was undergoing treatment. He was declared unfit to give a statement.

A case under Sections 103(1) for murder and 109(1) for attempt to murder of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita was registered at Keshav Puram police station. Police said they used technical inputs and local intelligence to identify those involved in the attack.

The main accused, Naresh Bahadur alias Nepali, 19, was apprehended along with Tarun, 19, and a juvenile, police said. “Naresh stabbed both victims with a knife, while Tarun and the juvenile assaulted them with fists. We have recovered the weapon of the offence at the instance of Naresh,” the officer said.
