Delhi to upgrade pollution test centres, install cameras to curb fraud

The Delhi government is set to upgrade pollution testing centres across the city and make camera monitoring mandatory to curb malpractice, improve transparency and strengthen the vehicle pollution and fitness testing system.

The government said camera monitoring will be mandatory to ensure greater transparency and prevent irregularities in the testing and certification process.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the move is aimed at ensuring that the entire process remains transparent and is monitored more closely.

The government has also decided to strengthen the vehicle pollution and fitness testing system through technological upgrades and improved monitoring.AUTOMATED FITNESS TESTING FOR COMMERCIAL VEHICLES

The Delhi government said state-of-the-art automated testing stations for commercial vehicle fitness checks have already been launched at Tekhand and Nand Nagri, New Delhi.

Each of these stations has the capacity to test approximately 72,000 vehicles annually, according to the government.

The move is aimed at addressing concerns over the use of older technology for commercial vehicle fitness certification and bringing greater technological oversight to the process.

The government said the measures are part of a broader "360-degree strategy" to strictly curb pollution in Delhi.

Under the strategy, the government is focusing on vehicle inspections, monitoring systems and technological upgrades to strengthen the overall pollution-control mechanism.
