Delhi woman covers up with shirt over her outfit after 'uncles' stare repeatedly in CP

A woman visiting Delhi’s Connaught Place with her friend said their outing took an uncomfortable turn after her friend felt compelled to put on an extra shirt because of what she described as relentless staring by several "uncles."

Instagram user Neha Kopani shared a video of the incident, showing her friend putting on a pink shirt over the outfit she had originally worn.

“She got so uncomfortable, she had to put on a shirt,” Neha said while recording her friend, before asking why she had decided to cover up.

Her friend replied that “uncles” had been staring at her.

Neha responded that such a “dirty crowd” could be found everywhere, but her friend said she had not expected to encounter that kind of behaviour in Connaught Place.

As the woman buttoned up the pink shirt, she turned around to show how she was now covered from head to toe. Neha remarked that perhaps people would stop staring at her now.

“There is absolutely no safety anywhere,” she said, adding that her friend had felt forced to put on the shirt because older men had allegedly been staring at her continuously.

She particularly emphasised that, according to her, it was not young men or boys who had made her friend uncomfortable, but older men.

“If I'm here, and I can't even wear the clothes that I like, it makes me very angry,” Neha said.

Towards the end of the video, she showed what her friend had originally been wearing underneath the shirt and said that this was all she had worn before deciding to cover herself up.

The video led to a discussion in the comments section about women feeling uncomfortable because of unwanted staring in public spaces.

Several users shared similar concerns about the crowd in Connaught Place, with one person saying that the behaviour of some older men made the area particularly uncomfortable to visit.

Another person pointed out that the woman appeared to have anticipated the possibility of feeling uncomfortable, as she had carried an extra shirt with her.
