Devotees gather for historic consecration of Meenakshi temple in Madurai

As poojas for the consecration ceremony of the Sri Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple are set to begin shortly, the devotees holding permit passes arrived in large numbers at the temple premises.

Expressing pride as final preparations wrapped up, Tamil Nadu Minister for Energy Resources and Law C.T.R. Nirmal Kumar stated that hosting the historic consecration of the Madurai Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple under the current administration was a matter of profound joy.

“Whatever festival takes place in Madurai is always special. Every arrangement has been meticulously executed under the direct orders of Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, who has personally reviewed the progress of the consecration works over the past three weeks,” Mr. Kumar said while inspecting the final arrangements just hours before the sacred ceremony.

To ensure safety and convenience for the large influx of devotees, authorities have arranged uninterrupted drinking water and electricity supplies, along with robust alternative contingency plans. Fully equipped medical units and ambulances have also been stationed on standby, he noted.

To manage the crowds, a filtering system based on pass colours—red, yellow, purple, and green—is in place, directing devotees to specific access areas closest to the temple core.

​Devotees without passes are being categorised as general attendees and will be permitted entry after the official ceremony concludes at 10 a.m.

​As announced earlier, drinking water and toilet facilities have been set up at regular intervals throughout the area to assist the public and police personnel. Meanwhile, the special cordon designated for VIPs, judges, and officials has been active since 3 a.m.

​Many devotees noted that simply hearing the direct hymns from the temple would suffice, while receiving blessings through the holy water sprayed from atop the temple would make the experience even more meaningful.

“The happiness of the people and all devotees is our true happiness,” he said, emphasising that the primary focus of the government remains the smooth and successful completion of the grand ceremony.
