Digital arrest scam: cyber fraudsters loot ₹10 crore from retired engineer

Cyber fraudsters reportedly looted around ₹10 crore from a retired engineer through a digital arrest scam. The victim lodged a complaint with the cybercrime police here on Tuesday.

The fraudsters allegedly impersonated police officials and threatened the victim over phone, claiming that his mobile number had been used for different crimes and that they could arrest him at any time. They put the retired engineer under digital arrest for a few days and made him transfer the amount into their accounts.

A digital arrest scam is a fraudulent cybercrime in which criminals impersonate law enforcement or government officials to terrify victims into believing they are under virtual arrest or investigation.

The cybercrime police are investigating the case.
