Drake Maye has hilarious joke about Patriots' '70-year-old' OL duo - Patriots Wire

FOXBOROUGH, Mass — There is a clear chemistry between Greg Van Roten and Morgan Moses, with the two having played together during the 2021 season on the New York Jets.

So, when Van Roten had to come in after Mike Onwenu was carted off due to an ankle injury, they picked up right where they left off. And after the game, Drake Maye was asked about losing such a key player, speaking highly of Onwenu while also praising the job done by Van Roten.

"Yeah, it is heartbreaking when you see a guy like Mike who has played through injuries, been here since he was a rookie, playing multiple positions and just does the — he is just gritty. He leaves it all out there, and we’ll make sure to check in on him, see how he is doing," the quarterback said. "But at the same time, Greg comes in there and guys are stepping up."

Maye also provided some levity to the situation, joking that between Moses and Van Roten, the combined years in the league certainly add up.

"You have got Greg and Mo [Morgan Moses] over there. That is combined at least 70 years over there, so they have got a lot of experience; they know how to play together, and they have been on teams before," Maye said with a smile. "So, I have got full confidence in GVR when he came in there. We’ve definitely got some things to clean up, but full confidence, and we ran the ball, at times, really well."

"Well, I think right now, we average like 72 years old on the right side," the veteran right tackle said. "I knew we already mentioned it, but obviously he's been in the league for a long time, and obviously being able to play some meaningful football with him in the past. There's chemistry there and that's obviously what you need. Big Mike going down is a hard one. What he brings to the table on the offensive line, and just who he is every day for us, we definitely appreciate him."

"He's been around in a lot of systems. He's played a lot of football. A veteran leader. So obviously, him going in, already just thinking, 'Hey, you don't have to worry about this guy being fundamentally sound,'" Moses added. "He's been around the league for a long time, so there's no question in my mind that he's going to be ready."
