Drug shipment seized on Mekong River bank - Bangkok Post
NAKHON PHANOM - Border patrol police seized about 1 million methamphetamine pills found in 10 sacks on the bank of the Mekong River in That Phanom district of this north eastern province.
The sacks were discovered on Saturday during a drugs suppression sweep by Border Patrol Police Sub-Division 23, along with local security agencies.
The seizure followed a tipoff that a large shipment of drugs was about to be smuggled across the river into That Phanom district.
Surveillance teams were sent out to monitor high-risk areas along the Mekong River, and intercepted the shipment early on Saturday morning.
The drugs were found on the riverbank near Ban Na Tham in tambon Phra Klang Thung, about 200 metres south of Sinnonthawat pier.
Pol Lt Col Anusorn Saensing, deputy commander of Border Patrol Police Sub-Division 23, told reporters on Sunday that investigators would expand the investigation, using advanced intelligence-gathering tools to identify those behind the operation and dismantle the smugglers' network.
The seized drugs were handed over to Lak Sila police station for legal processing.
