An elephant calf that fell into an abandoned well in a plantation at Chokkana near Palappilly in Thrissur district on Thursday was rescued after hours of effort.

Rubber tapping workers found the calf early in the morning and informed the forest officers.

Rescue operations were led by the Forest department, Fire and Rescue Services personnel and local residents. Rescue teams broke down the side wall of the well using an earth mover to bring the calf out.

Preliminary assessments indicate that the calf has not sustained any serious injuries.

The calf was part of a herd that had strayed to the area. Later, it joined the herd.
