Elite 5-star forward Asa Montgomery announces commitment to Duke - USA Today
Landing elite basketball talent hasn't been a problem for Duke the last few decades. On Wednesday, Oct. 28, the Blue Devils added their latest five-star prospect.
Hillgrove (Powder Springs, GA) small forward Asa Montgomery announced his commitment to Duke on Wednesday, choosing the Blue Devils over several notable programs such as Auburn, Georgia Tech, LSU, North Carolina and UConn.
The 6-foot-7, 200-pounder is ranked as the No. 8 overall prospect, No. 3 power forward and No. 2 player out of Georgia in the latest USA TODAY Sports composite rankings for the 2027 class. His decision to commit to the Blue Devils comes after he capped off his slate of official visits with the Blue Devils on Oct. 2.
He also took official visits to LSU, Georgia Tech, UConn and North Carolina in the weeks before. Duke extended an offer to Montgomery on Aug. 12.
Montgomery is coming off of a junior season with Hillgrove in which he averaged 18.9 points and 10.3 rebounds per game. That was up from the 16.7 points and 8.7 rebounds he averaged during his sophomore season.
During the summer in the EYBL, he was at his best averaging 27.9 points shooting 54% from the floor to go along with 10.2 rebounds and 1.9 blocks.
Duke landing multiple five-star prospects is nothing new. And so far in their 2027 class, the Blue Devils have a core of two players they can build around.
Wisconsin Lutheran (Milwaukee, MI) five-star power forward Kager Knueppel followed in his older brother Kon Knueppel's footsteps and announced his commitment to Duke on June 29. Kon played at Duke two seasons ago and was taken by the Charlotte Hornets with the fourth pick in the 2025 NBA Draft and ultimately finished second in NBA Rookie of the Year voting.
As for Kager, he's ranked as the No. 17 prospect in the composite rankings. Duke also holds a commitment from 6-foot-5 point guard Luke Paul out of Australia.
Prior to Montgomery's commitment, 247Sports ranked Duke's 2027 class No. 38 nationally.
