Entering contract year, Broncos QB Bo Nix motivated to not let team down - Broncos Wire
Earlier this week, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers gave quarterback Baker Mayfield a three-year contract extension that averages $55 million per season. That number might be the starting point when top quarterbacks from the 2024 NFL draft class begin negotiating their contract extensions.
Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix is entering his third season in the NFL. He won't be eligible for an extension before completing his third season, so Nix could be a candidate for a new deal in 2027.
During training camp last month, Nix was asked about his motivation entering what could be a contract year.
“I think competitively, the way we are as players, you better treat every year as a year you have to prove," Nix said. "You have to go out there and show the team that you’re worth what you’re putting in for you and what they’re building around you. You can’t ever let up and think that, ‘I’ve made it. I’ve gotten to where I need to be,’ because quite honestly, I’ll never feel that way. There’s always the next season. There’s always the next championship to go after. I think every year for every player is going to feel like a contract year because it should.
"You have to go out there and continue to earn it day-by-day because there’s only 32 people in my position and many others that are trying to get in that same position. No days can you take off, and no days can you come out here and give half effort or not be prepared, not be ready to go. I think at the end of the day, that’s just the internal motivation that I have to not let my teammates down and not let the organization down. I owe them my 100 percent, no matter if I was being paid for it or not being paid for it. They’re my teammates, and we all work hard together. It’s my job to go out there and put them in the best situation possible.”
Nix still has two seasons (2026 and 2027) remaining on his rookie contract, plus a potential fifth-year option for the 2028 season. So there's not a big rush at the moment, but an extension will likely arrive when he's eligible.
"Obviously, we want Bo here long-term, but we’re really focused on getting ready for this season, putting a competitive team on the field," Broncos owner/CEO Greg Penner said in August. "I’ll leave that to George [Paton] and Sean [Payton]; will have conversations about it, but I’ll leave that up to them to lead.”
This season, Nix has a team-friendly salary cap hit worth just north of $5 million. When he eventually signs an extension, the quarterback will likely average ten times that number each season (and perhaps more). In the meantime, the Broncos will look to contend for a Super Bowl while they have a healthy cap situation.
