The government has widened the EPFO net, bringing more employees under the mandatory social security system. The wage ceiling for mandatory EPF contribution has been raised from Rs 15,000 to Rs 25,000 a month.

The move is expected to bring more than 51 lakh additional employees under the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO). The Union Cabinet has approved the increase as part of efforts to expand social security coverage and align the system with rising wages.

EPFO said in a post on X that the higher wage ceiling will broaden the scope of social security in line with the changing workforce and rising wage levels.

So, what does the higher wage ceiling mean for employees? Here are five key benefits.

One of the biggest changes is that more employees earning between Rs 15,000 and Rs 25,000 a month will be brought within the mandatory EPF framework, subject to the applicable rules.

Under the present ceiling, a new employee joining a job with wages above Rs 15,000 was not automatically covered under mandatory EPF. However, the higher limit will now widen the pool of workers who can access formal social security benefits.

For employees, this means a larger part of the workforce will have access to structured long-term savings through the provident fund system.HIGHER ACCESS TO RETIREMENT SAVINGS

EPF is designed to help employees build a retirement corpus through regular contributions during their working years.

With the wage ceiling now raised, more workers will be able to participate in the EPF system. Regular contributions can help employees build long-term savings while they are earning, providing financial support after retirement or during eligible withdrawals.

The move also brings the contribution framework closer to current wage levels.PENSION BENEFITS UNDER EPS

The wider EPFO coverage also means eligible employees can get access to pension protection under the Employees' Pension Scheme (EPS), subject to the scheme's rules.

EPS provides a pension benefit to eligible members after retirement, while certain provisions also cover situations such as disability and family pension.

Another benefit linked to EPFO membership is insurance protection under the Employees' Deposit Linked Insurance Scheme (EDLI), subject to applicable conditions.

Here, it must be mentioned that the EDLI Scheme provides life insurance cover to EPF members.

By bringing more employees into the formal EPFO framework, the higher wage ceiling can therefore extend this layer of financial protection to a larger workforce.GREATER LONG-TERM FINANCIAL SECURITY

The change is not just about provident fund contributions. It is also aimed at strengthening formal social security for workers as wages and employment patterns change.

For employees, being part of the formal EPFO system can provide a combination of retirement savings, pension-related benefits and insurance protection, depending on their eligibility under the respective schemes.

The government expects the move to support employment formalisation, worker retention and long-term retirement security.

For employers, wider social security coverage could also contribute to workforce stability and employee retention. Source: pib.gov.in

The government said the move as an important step towards strengthening an inclusive and resilient social security framework, aligned with India’s economic growth, rising wage levels and expanding formal employment as the country moves towards Viksit Bharat 2047.- EndsPublished By: Jasmine anandPublished On: Sep 17, 2026 12:40 IST
