EU commissioner says threats against civilians ‘unacceptable’ amid bomb threats targeting several planes - Anadolu Ajansı
European Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism Apostolos Tzitzikostas said Thursday that any threats against civilians were “unacceptable,” stressing that ensuring citizens’ safety and security remained a priority amid reported bomb threats targeting several planes.
In a statement shared on US social media platform X, Tzitzikostas said the EU was closely monitoring the situation and was in contact with the affected member states and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).
He said the EU-level information-sharing mechanism on aviation security had been activated.
Tzitzikostas added that he had called on national authorities to cooperate closely with airport operators, airlines and law enforcement agencies.
He noted that national authorities were responsible for assessing security threats, investigating incidents and implementing appropriate aviation security measures.
“It is too early to draw conclusions on whether the reported incidents are linked. National investigations remain ongoing,” Tzitzikostas said.
At least 22 passenger flights across Europe were targeted by reported bomb threats over four days, triggering emergency landings, diversions, military escorts and security inspections at airports in several countries.
The incidents, reported between Nov. 2 and Nov. 5, affected flights operated by Ryanair, Wizz Air, LOT Polish Airlines, SAS, Finnair, Jettime, Aer Lingus and Aegean Airlines, among others.
